The greatest internet story is the story of Pierre Omidyar, a French-Iranian born in Paris who migrated to the USA. Omidyar believed that the human race is basically good and that online selling and buying would work. This is a man who believed that auction online would work, yet, he had never been to an auction all his life. Thus, in 1995, he tried and set up his own site called Auctionweb which mainly sold antique,books, eletrical equiptment, comics and computer items. Remarkably, despite the naysayers who said it wouldn't work, it did.

Omidyar left his regualar job and hired a single employee by the name of Chris Agarpao. Actionweb was doing so well, though at that time he only had a modest office with only about two chairs and a table. Despite this, in 1995, Auctionweb hosted over ten thousand bids. His business was working so he decided to later call his enterprise Echo Bay, but that name was taken by a Canadian company in Nevada. So he settled for ebay. Yes, the same great Ebay today. Seeing the profitability of the idea, real enterpreneurs were only too willing to help him - including Magraret Whitman (now Mccain's Campaign Manager) who helped develop ebay into the what it is today. Last we heard from Omidyar he was drining a 4 million dollar car and he's retired at 41. He founded the Omodyar Network that does philantrophy and humanitarian work positively affecting millions of people.

This cliche’ is true :Your trash is someone else’s treasure.

Maybe not literal treasure-but what you no longer need may be important to someone else and vice-versa. Ask Kyle Macdonald who traded one red paperclip for a red pen. Anyway he “built” wealth without an exchange of money and ended up owning a house. Not bad for a one red paper clip but that’s exactly what bartering is all about : getting what you want by bartering (or trading) your stuff for other people’s things they no longer need. Bartering is getting what you want without having to buy it. It saves you money and you can even turn it into an “enterprise” as Kyle Macdonald did.

Bartering also means exchanging your services for something you need. For instance, your water pipe freezes during the winter and you need a plumbler who needs your extra TV gathering dust in your attic. He fixes your pipe and you you give him your old TV set. You’re both happy with the trade. Or if you happen to be a whiz at something - like Algebra - you can tutor your neighbor’s kid in exchange for the extra vacuum cleaner they no longer need.

Bartering is an exchange of needs without any cash involved which is a clever way to save on cash and still get what you both want. During difficult economic times, those who learn how to barter may even get richer. The “art” of bartering however means that you would have to put a value on the things you no longer need finding out the people who may have need of them. Usually, you’d find out that more than one individual needs or wants your “stuff” and you’d have to determine what things they no longer need which would be valuable to you. Then the exchange ensues. Really simple!

What even makes it more convenient is that there are bartering sites in the internet. These days, you can even barter your house for days or weeks for another house when you want to take a vacation. There are also local bartering sites which advertise their “needs” for something you may have. There is likewise online exchange of services. Thus, bartering seems to be a REAL workable option while there the fear of economic depression.

Your “useless stuff” may no longer be valuable to you but others may value it more than you do because they have different needs and wants than you do. “Value of things” is not the same for different people. An example of this - an air conditioner may not be a need if you live in the Upper Michigan area but it is definitely something a family from Texas may need. One may no longer want an old-fashioned bag but of you’re a vintage collector (or if you happen to love retro dressing) that would have a lot value to you.

Perhaps you may not be a bartering enterpreneur as Kyle Macdonald is, but bartering can save you hundreds even thousands of dollars. Plus, it helps you unclutter your home and get new things and services you value with no cash cost at all. Your useless stuff may matter a LOT to another much as another’s useless stuff may be something that you need or WANT. Bartering enriches both your wallet and soul. Go ahead and try it and realize that your useless stuff can make you wealthy even during dismal times when most fear getting poor and broke.
